Let's make a bold statement:
The reasons for dissatisfaction with low-power audio equipment in China stem from the inherently distorted environment. Most people are content to listen to audio at extremely low levels, often around 100 watts or even lower, while also listening to domestic "old friends." They prioritize sound quality and clarity above all else, and they simply don't care about the power consumption of their equipment. Furthermore, no one adheres to the principle of only using the minimum power necessary for communication.
This WAPC competition was my third time setting up a shortwave station, using the XieGu G90N and a 20-meter end-fed antenna (also from XieGu), which I had previously purchased. With only 10W of power output, I managed to make 50 QSOs in about 12 hours of actual operation, covering distances from Jilin Changchun in the west to Xinjiang in the south, and extending as far east as Indonesia and Japan.
In my previous two attempts, I spent several hours setting up and operating, but only achieved a few QSOs, even with 15W of power. The response rate was very low, especially when using a "market" frequency.
What struck me most about the first attempt was that due to a lack of experience, I used an inefficient GP (ground-plane) antenna, which allowed me to make contact with a Japanese station. Despite both signals being extremely weak, we struggled for several minutes before managing to exchange call signs. Later, when I checked on QRZ, I discovered that this Japanese station was actually a well-respected veteran. Our distance was far from DX (long-distance communication), but he didn't give up. It seems that "old friends" would have already given up or never even bothered with you in the first place.
Another point is that everyone says that a 100W device should only transmit at 15W, and that the maximum speed allowed domestically is 120km/h. However, any vehicle can reach this speed or higher. Does this mean that radios and vehicles are the same? If a vehicle exceeds 120km/h, it poses a greater risk to both itself and other road users. Furthermore, with strong regulation and cameras everywhere, is this the case for radios as well? In reality, if we're talking about a 100W device transmitting at 15W, does that mean that one out of ten devices actually transmits at 15W? I doubt it. Some people are very passionate when complaining about illegal radio stations, and they want to personally enforce the rules.
