First, I will provide a list of the necessary materials.
Passport (or other document with an English name and photo, which can be used to verify identity)
U.S. Shipping Address (can use address of family, friends, or a forwarding warehouse/mailbox within the USPS service area in the U.S.)

The specific requirements for VE (Vehicle Emission) may vary depending on the VEC, but they are generally similar. It is recommended to inquire about the specific requirements before taking the exam by sending an email.
Once the materials are ready, you can find available and time-appropriate online exams to register for at https://hamstudy.org/sessions/remote. The exam fees range from $10-$15, and payments are typically made via PayPal. If you are a minor or a college student, we recommend registering for an exam organized by GLAARG VEC, which offers free exam fees of $10 for both college students and minors.
The exam typically uses Zoom, a video conferencing software that requires a secure internet connection. Two days before the exam, the exam organizers will send you the Zoom meeting link via the email address you provided during registration. The exam will take place in this meeting room. Once you enter the room, the main examiner will assign you to your designated examination area.
Once inside the examination hall, you need to do the following:
1. Verify your identity information; VE will require you to present your Photo ID (typically, a passport).
2. Inspect the exam environment. VE will instruct you to look around the room, including the ceiling and floor, to check for any prohibited items. If any are found, they must be removed. (Therefore, it is best to conduct testing in an empty room.)
3. Once preparation is complete, access the exam.tools website to begin testing. VE will guide you on how to start the exam and answer questions.
4. After completing the quiz, if you pass, VE will guide you to review FORM 605 and sign it electronically. Once signed, the exam is complete.
Regarding communication about points 1 through 3, if you don't encounter anyone who speaks Chinese (VE), it is necessary to communicate in English. The test questions are only available in English and Spanish versions, and participants need to have basic English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills to take the exam.
Once VE has sent the exam results to the FCC, you will need to log in to the CORES system (https://apps.fcc.gov/cores/) To make a payment, those who do not have an FCC account (and do not already possess an FRN) must register on the CORES system login page. After registering, link your FRN to this FCC account. Once linked, pay $35 using a Visa/Mastercard card.
Since the FCC no longer issues paper licenses, the shipping costs for the documents have also been saved. If you need a physical copy of the license, you can simply print out the PDF version. Therefore, obtaining the license will likely cost around $45-50 in total, which includes exam fees of $10-15 plus a license fee of $35.
This document only describes the exam I took. The procedures for exams organized by different VECs and VE organizations may differ. If you have any questions about the exam, it is recommended that you ask the relevant VE organization for the exam you are preparing to take.
