QRP Speed Through Two POTA Stations
How to use this machine for FT8 operation.
Replicate and avoid common mistakes.
I've become addicted to making my own QRP equipment, and I've already built several sets. The total cost for 5 sets is approximately 425 yuan (RMB), including the purchase of materials and components. Today, I set up two more sets with another amateur radio station, using hand-made patches and soldering. I encountered some issues along the way, so I'm documenting some key points.
- When soldering patch components, it's best to first solder the capacitors and resistors, then the high-temperature components, followed by electrolytic capacitors, then power inductors, and finally the crystal oscillator. This helps prevent overheating of the materials during soldering. The crystal oscillator and power inductor seem particularly prone to damage. I use a hot air gun with a minimum temperature of 350 degrees Celsius when soldering.
- The silkscreen positions for the R11 and R14 components were reversed, so the resistors need to be swapped before soldering. The automatic/machine-placed components are unaffected because the BOM (Bill of Materials) and location table are correct. If not swapped, it will result in no signal reception.
- A magnetic ring with 10 turns is required, but using 9 turns will result in better efficiency. (The official instructions have been updated.)
- To flash a new 328p firmware, you need to flash the bootloader. I found that the 5351 was having issues, so I changed the I2C address in the firmware for the 5351. Also, I noticed that the direction of the knob was incorrect, so I swapped the encoder AB pin numbers.
- Check your MOSFET; the correct pin order for a BS170 is reversed.
That concludes.
