X6100 User Manual (Custom Firmware - BG7NZL)
Supported Firmware: The BG7NZL version (including FT8 enhancements, remote browser access, and diagnostic logs) integrated on top of the gdyuldin upstream main. If you are still using the original factory system or have not flashed this side-loaded firmware, most of these features will not be available.
How to flash this firmware.
This firmware runs via side-loading from an SD card, without modifying the internal storage of the device. This is a non-invasive side-loading method: simply remove the SD card and power on the device to return to the original factory system.
Preparation
First, verify the baseband.(BASE)Version is 1.1.9 (System Info → BASE). If the version is lower than 1.1.9, please first upgrade the baseband and then flash the SD card image.
Prepare an SD card (the capacity should be as specified by the maintainer, using the `sdcard.img` file; it is recommended to use Class 10 or higher).
Obtain the `sdcard.img` image file from the maintainer.
Write the image to the SD card.
Windows
Use Rufus or a similar tool.
Choose the SD card and sdcard.img, and use the tool's instructions to write (either "write as a DD image" or an equivalent option; do not just copy a single file onto the card).
Linux / macOS
Verify the device name of the SD card (e.g., /dev/sdb; be sure to double-check, as writing the wrong drive will erase the entire hard disk).
Example (replace /dev/disk4 with your actual device):

Once the writing is complete, safely eject the SD card.
How to start up
The radio is completely turned off.
Insert the SD card that has been pre-loaded with the image.
Power on, boot from the SD card containing this firmware.
Please do not remove the SD card while in use – hot-plugging a running system may cause it to crash, data corruption, or file system errors.
Restore to factory default system
Normal shutdown.
Remove the SD card.
Restart → The machine starts from its internal storage, which is the original factory system.
No flashing required; no need to clear data. This method does not write to the device's internal flash, and can be easily reversed at any time.
Important: This firmware requires a baseband.(BASE)The version must be 1.1.9.
Baseband versions below 1.1.9 are not supported, and may experience issues such as waterfall scaling misalignment, IF shift/FFT anomalies, and abnormal FT8/DSP behavior. Please first upgrade the baseband, then flash the SD card image.
Regarding FT8 (Please read this first)
The core logic for FT8 communication, automatic frequency selection, and responding to other stations, which were previously implemented in the upstream version, has been comprehensively rewritten. This is not simply adding a few buttons as in previous versions. The design goal is to achieve smoother operation during busy frequencies, multiple simultaneous calls, and automatic/manual switching, with fewer glitches. In theory, the actual experience should be more fluid than the upstream FT8, but due to the extensive changes, it is currently a beta version.
If you encounter issues such as inconsistent behavior with upstream FT8, abnormal automatic mode operation, mid-communication stalls, or incorrect decoding/transmission timing, please directly provide feedback to the personnel responsible for maintaining the firmware (including details about the Auto/TX CQ settings and any on-screen English prompts, along with approximate frequencies). Your feedback is crucial for improving this version.

The "upstream main" web page of gdyuldin already includes General / Bands / Digital modes / File browser / Time Editor / dmesg; BG7NZL additionally adds the Remote page. The following sections will also explain these web page functions, making it convenient to export logs and modify parameters on a daily basis.
1. Before use, please ensure that…
The call sign and grid are set up on the radio (but without a call sign, many functions cannot be used).
Antenna connected properly, standing wave ratio is normal, and power level is appropriate.
Comply with local regulations; FT8 operation requires someone to be present and in charge, and should not be operated unattended.
FT8 Power and Cooling (Read Carefully)
To give operators more freedom, this firmware removes the 5W power limit imposed by gdyuldin upstream within FT8. After entering FT8, it allows for a maximum of 10W (if you had previously set a higher value, the screen will display that it has been automatically limited to 10W).
10W requires external active cooling (e.g., forced air cooling using fans directed at the chassis/PA area, and cannot rely solely on natural convection). FT8 is a high-duty cycle mode (where the TX can be active in every slot), which means that the PA generates heat quickly at 10W. Without sufficient external cooling, the PA will be damaged within a short period of time.
If you cannot guarantee adequate cooling, please set the power to 5W or lower and reduce the continuous transmission time.
Baseband(BASE)The version must be 1.1.9 (check in System Info). If the version is lower than 1.1.9, please upgrade the base first before flashing this firmware.
This FT8 build is still in beta. If you encounter any issues, please provide feedback to the maintainers; do not treat it as a fully equivalent final product compared to the upstream FT8.
II. How to get started with FT8
Find the app area (the section with the "Apps" button) on the main screen.
Navigate to the FT8 screen using FT8.
In the center of the screen is the decoding list (incoming signals appear in rows); on the right and below are the function buttons.
Exiting FT8: Simply press the "Return" key to exit. Any incomplete contact logs will be automatically saved (see the section on "Contact Logs" below).
Three. How to turn pages using the FT8 button.
The right-side buttons are divided into 4 pages, with a maximum of 5 keys per page. Pressing "Page: 1:4" will cycle through the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th pages, and pressing again will return to the 1st page.

Below, I will explain each button based on its usage frequency.
IV. Manual Connection (Manually select from list)
This is the most basic and reliable method.
Verify that "Auto" is set to "Off" (Page 1), indicating fully manual control.
Verify that TX Call is Enabled (Page 2), which indicates that transmission is allowed.
In the decoding list, use the knob to select a line, and then press "Confirm" (which is equivalent to "Select this message").
The radio will automatically generate the next sentence for the broadcast and transmit it at the appropriate time.
After the other party responds, continue tapping on their new messages until the communication ends (usually ending with a "73").
When a connection is successfully established, the screen will display "QSO saved as…" and the record will be written to the log.
A helpful tip
If the other party does not respond after several attempts, the radio station will only attempt to contact them a maximum of 5 times. After that, it will automatically stop, to avoid sending empty messages.
If you press the button again while transmitting, it will stop transmitting (the TX call becomes "off").
V. Automatically selects a channel (Auto and Auto Mode)
The first page has two related buttons that should be used together:

When using Full or Pre mode, someone must be present at the radio station to immediately disable transmission or change the frequency.
5.2 Auto Mode (Selecting a Target When Multiple Targets Are Present)
When multiple devices can be connected simultaneously, the priority switching rule in Auto Mode is as follows:

The Auto mode will remember your selection and revert to this setting each time you enter FT8.
By default, Auto in FT8 mode is set to Off each time it's opened, and must be manually turned on.
Automatic mode also:
When someone calls you, prioritize answering (more important than responding to the ongoing CQ).
Once a channel has been successfully connected, it will not be proactively called again (to avoid redundant channel switching). If the other party calls you again, you will still respond normally.
When a continuous CQ call on the same frequency fails (e.g., no response), it will briefly skip that channel and try again after a few slots, to avoid getting stuck on one particular channel.
The Pre-档 can be used to quickly add a channel when someone is finishing up with RR73/73, or when a channel is just becoming available. However, please use it cautiously when channels are already crowded.
Decoding list colors (useful when monitoring CQ):

5.3 Do not mix manual and automatic operation.
Clicked on a row in the list → Automatically turned off CQ and Auto, and entered pure manual control for this device.
Changed to Auto or Auto Mode → will turn off CQ and restart the automatic logic.
Open TX CQ → Set to Auto (Wait for someone else to call).
Six. Self-initiated CQ (TX CQ)
Using the TX CQ cycle in three levels:

Relative to the upstream main, the TX CQ setting is: Enabled/Disabled (indicating whether or not to call), and BG7NZL uses Even/Odd to specify which half of the FT8 time slot to transmit in, to avoid collisions with decoding/transmission.
How to use it
First, set up your call sign and grid location.
Select Even or Odd based on TX CQ. (Choose one of these options, depending on which set of transmission times you prefer.)
The screen will display "Next TX: CQ...", followed by repeating the callsign CQ according to the settings.
Once someone calls you, the radio will prioritize answering, temporarily giving way to the CQ signal; after the communication segment ends, the CQ signal will continue calling.
The "Maximum Call Attempts" setting still resulted in no response, and TX CQ automatically returned to Off.
To stop transmitting, press the TX CQ button until "Off" appears on the display.
CQ Modifier (Page 3): Allows you to add a suffix to the CQ callsign, such as "POTA" for a specific activity. Enter the alphanumeric characters using the buttons and confirm the save.
7. Free MSG (Send a custom short message)
Page 1: Free MSG: Send a short message of up to 13 characters, and send it only once.
Allowed characters: spaces, numbers, uppercase letters A–Z, and +, -, ., /, ? (lowercase will automatically convert to uppercase).
Typical applications: TU 73, PSE QSY, QSO B4, etc.
Operation
As per Free MSG.
Enter text, confirm.
Screen prompt: "Next TX: ..." - to be issued at an appropriate time.

If you are currently busy (e.g., have another message to send), a "TX busy" notification will be displayed, please try again later.
You can also send free messages while the connection is in progress; this ensures that your message will be delivered, even if it takes a cycle to complete.
The last input will be automatically saved; you can modify it next time you open it.

Instructions: TX tail alignment – no separate button; instead of cutting off the entire waveform when it's about to finish, it cuts off only the front portion. This makes transmission more stable (relative to the upstream main).
Ten. Auto DNF (Suppress local strong signals)
Button position: Page 3, Auto DNF (new relative to upstream main; default On).
10.1 What problem does this address?
Within the FT8 frequency band, if there are strong local stations nearby – such as high-power SSB, strong carrier signals, broadcast interference, or narrow-band signals on fixed frequencies – they often appear much stronger than distant FT8 weak signal transmissions. The receiver/front-end can be easily overwhelmed by these strong signals, leading to a decrease or even complete failure of FT8 decoding.
The Auto DNF function will automatically identify such local strong peaks within each FT8/FT4 slot, and temporarily add a notch filter with approximately 70 Hz bandwidth.(DNF), reduce the impact of strong signals to free up dynamic range for weak FT8 signals. This is specifically targeted at narrow peaks that are "much higher than ambient noise," not a general noise reduction.
Typical scenario: A large transmitter is continuously transmitting on a specific frequency near a tower, and the decoding list suddenly becomes sparse.
10.2 How it works (What you need to know)
Scan once per time slot
After the initial window of approximately 0.25 to 0.75 seconds (15 seconds per FT8 slot), analyze the spectrum within the current FT8 range and identify the strongest narrow-band peak.
Higher than "rumble noise"
The radio estimates the normal background noise in this frequency band, and then measures how much higher the peak is compared to the background noise (in dB). Only if the peak is more than approximately 40 dB above the background noise is it considered worth filtering (the maintainer can adjust the threshold value on the SD card, as shown below).
Temporary trap, automatic cancellation.
When the conditions are met, DNF is temporarily opened only within this time window, with the center aligned to the strong peak; the total width is approximately 70 Hz (approximately 35 Hz on each side).
Automatically remove the entry before it expires, and rescan in the next time slot.
You should also disable it before transmitting to avoid interfering with your own FT8 signal.
When exiting FT8, restore the DNF center/width/switch settings you had previously configured before entering FT8. This will not affect other modes such as SSB.
Its relationship to your manual DNF
If the main interface has already opened DNF Auto (Adaptive Notch Filter), Auto DNF will not be overlaid, to avoid conflicts between the two sets of logic. Simply enable Auto DNF in FT8 normally.
10.3 Tips for Waterfall Charts
When a strong peak is detected, two vertical lines appear on the waterfall plot to indicate the frequency position. Next to these lines, there is a label " + XX dB ", which indicates how much higher the peak is compared to the background noise.

No setup required; it automatically records data in the background after startup. The standard communication function does not need to be opened.

FT8 is not a hands-free tool – no matter how advanced the automated features are, someone must be present to immediately turn off the TX or exit FT8.
Do not occupy a frequency for an extended period when it is congested; terminate communication promptly after completion.
10 W + High space factor = Requires external active cooling – see Section 1, Item 4; Do not use non-compliant amplifiers; Cannot guarantee cooling performance if using full 10 W.
The remote control should only be used on your home Wi-Fi network, and do not expose the management webpage to the public internet.

Q: The list always seems to be failing to decode?
Check if the frequency is within the common FT8 bands, if the mode is FT8, whether time sync has been tried, and if the antenna and standing wave are normal.
Q: What does "Invalid message" mean when I click on a notification?
This line might not be a suitable line for tracking (e.g., lines containing only information), try using a different line that includes the call sign.
Q: Why doesn't the automatic mode call a specific CQ?
It may be that it was previously connected (check if the CQ line has been deleted/deep green), or that it recently failed and was briefly skipped, or that the signal/rules are not compliant. You can switch to Auto Mode or use the manual point list.
Q: What are the differences between FT8 log and TX diagnostic log?
/mnt/ft8_logs/: Only records FT8 decoding and FT8 transmission;
/mnt/tx_logs/: Records all transmission events, for maintenance personnel to use in troubleshooting hardware/timing issues.
Q: Did Zhonglian intend to stop transmitting mid-flight?

Verify that both the phone and the radio are using the same Wi-Fi network and IP address, and that the address includes "http://".
Q: Does "Free MSG" indicate that TX is busy?
If the current sentence hasn't finished transmitting or has been canceled, try again; or first turn off TX CQ.
Q: I've noticed that FT8 decoding has become less reliable. Could this be due to strong local interference?
First, check the waterfall for any long-lasting, strong peaks that remain stationary. Keep Auto DNF: On and observe if blue/red vertical lines appear along with "+ XX dB". If this doesn't work, try changing the frequency or reducing the front-end gain, or ask a technician to adjust auto\_notch\_threshold\_db.txt.
Q: What are the differences between Auto DNF and the main interface DNF?
On the main interface, DNF allows you to manually set the center/width or use DNF Auto for general adaptive notch filtering. The Auto DNF feature in FT8 scans local strong narrow peaks within each slot and applies temporary notch filtering during an FT8 session. When the FT8 session ends, your original DNF settings are restored.
Q: Can it operate at 10W? What are the required conditions?
Yes, but it must have external active cooling (fans, etc.) directed at the machine/PA area. The FT8 transmit duty cycle is high, and a passive PA with no airflow at 10W is very likely to overheat and be damaged. If you cannot guarantee adequate cooling, please use 5W or less.
