Core Focus: Enhancing FT8 automation capabilities, enabling remote browser control (on mobile/computer), improving logging and obstacle avoidance capabilities, and optimizing stability and power consumption.
The most important changes to focus on (at a glance):
New: FT8 AutoSel (Automatically selects and proceeds through the standard process from the CQ list; only used for "responding to CQ," and requires someone to be monitoring).
New: FT8 Free MSG (FT8 Free Text / Type00 style one-time free text message).
Optimization: Significant reduction in CPU usage for FT8 scenarios (measured by maintainer on a real device, approximately 29% → 9%).
The new features you will directly experience.
1) Browser "Remote Control": Use your phone/computer to remotely control buttons and knobs.
You can access the X6100's web page using a browser on the same network, and enter the remote interface.
What can be done:
Remote controls: such as POWER/GEN/APP/KEY/MSG/DFN/DFL, F1-F5, LOCK, PTT, BAND±, MODE, A/B, PRE, ATU, V/M, AGC, FST, etc.
Remote rotary control: VFO, MFK, VOL (including stepped and push actions).
Remote screen viewing: The page will display a screenshot of the current machine's screen (manually refreshed).
This means that when you place the machine on a desk or outdoor stand, you can use your phone inside to complete most common operations.
2) File Browser: Easier export of logs/screenshots/recordings/ADI
The web page now includes file browsing and viewing capabilities:
Available for download: Common files in the DATA partition (e.g., ADIF, screenshots, recordings, and the newly added TX/FT8 logs).
Available for online viewing: Text files can be opened directly in a browser (large files may be truncated to prevent lag).
You can preview images online (e.g., screenshots).
For users who are not familiar with computer commands, this is equivalent to accessing the data on an SD card using a web-based interface, similar to how you would access files on a cloud storage service.
3) dmesg page: One-click access to recent system logs (for troubleshooting).
The web page now includes a feature to view the latest 200 lines of `dmesg`.
You don't need to know how to use SSH, nor do you need to be familiar with command-line interfaces.
When you encounter problems such as "peripheral not recognized / USB device error / occasional freezes," simply take a screenshot of the `dmesg` page content and send it to the maintainer.
FT8 related: New features/improvements (focused on user experience)
1) New feature: AutoSel (automatically selects and completes a full FT8 QSO process)
This version introduces AutoSel: It will automatically select and call CQ stations from the decoding list, just like manually selecting a CQ from a list while sitting in front of the radio, and then proceed with the standard FT8 process.
Important Safety Instructions (Please read carefully):
AutoSel is only used for "responding to other CQ calls" (automatically selecting a target from the CQ list and initiating a call). It is not used for automatically sending CQ calls.
I strongly advise against using it in an unattended mode. When using AutoSel, someone must be present at the radio to monitor and immediately stop transmission/change frequency/adjust power if necessary.
Typical Use: If you want to connect more easily and reduce repetitive CQ operations, especially when someone is monitoring, this feature allows for that.
Behavioral characteristics (focused on practical application):
Avoid "infinite loop re-calling the same CQ": If a CQ has already been tried without success, and TX continues to attempt it repeatedly, it will temporarily skip that CQ and look for other targets.
"Someone is calling you": Prioritize: When AutoSel is active and a message clearly indicates that someone is calling you (e.g., "to-me", "to-me GRID"), prioritize handling the response in higher priority scenarios.
Supports user-defined blacklists.
Place an `autosel_blacklist.txt` file (with one callsign per line) in the SD card's DATA partition.
AutoSel will always skip these callsigns, even if they are the only CQ candidates.
The functions of each option in AutoSel (when you navigate to Page 3:3 in the FT8 page's button area and press AutoSel, it will cycle through):
Off: Disable automatic call selection (CQ will no longer be automatically selected).
First: Select "First Come, First Served" (the CQ that was decoded first within this time slot).
Farthest: Prioritize selecting the "furthest" CQ (which requires you to have a valid local QTH/grid, and for the other party's CQ to also have a legitimate grid; otherwise, it will revert to First).
Best SNR: Prioritize CQ with the best SNR (easier to successfully enter the process, suitable for those who "prioritize stability and success rate").
New Grid: Prioritize "New Grid" based on your QSO log (prioritizing grids you haven't worked in the current band+mode; if no New Grid candidates are available, fall back to First).
A helpful tip: If you see a "grid" with an asterisk (*) in the list, it means that this "grid" hasn't been successfully used yet under the current band and mode.
The hard rules of AutoSel ("never to be selected"):
Radio stations that have already been connected (any method / any band/mode): If your QSO log contains a history of QSOs with this callsign, AutoSel will skip it and will no longer automatically attempt to contact it.
User blacklist: Callsigns listed in autosel\_blacklist.txt will be permanently excluded (never selected).
Note: The two "never select" judgments above depend on the contents of your logs and the DATA partition.
If you have cleared/replaced the log database (e.g., reset/changed the card/changed params.db), the historical communication filtering will lose its basis.
`autosel_blacklist.txt` supports one callsign per line; lines starting with '#' or ';' will be treated as comments; case and spaces are automatically normalized.
AutoSel's "Temporary Yield" (to avoid repeated calls):
If you have already made an automatic contact with a CQ station and have their grid square in your log,(GRID)"At this stage, if the number of repetitions is exhausted without any progress, AutoSel will add it to a short-term avoidance list, and in subsequent time slots, it will prioritize selecting other CQ signals."
When the short-term avoidance mechanism fails to decode the CQ signal from that specific radio station for several consecutive time slots, it will automatically be deactivated.
It's okay if you don't know how to use a computer: You can first download this file using the "File browser". When you need to modify the content, you can ask the maintainer to prepare it and put it back in the DATA partition (or use an SD card reader to modify the file on the SD card).
AutoSel User Manual (for Operators):
Before entering the FT8 page, please ensure that: the frequency/band and center frequency are correct, the power/antenna/SWR are within acceptable limits, and you have complied with all applicable rules for using digital modes in your area.
On the FT8 page, make sure your Callsign, Grid/QTH, and other basic parameters are set correctly (otherwise, the messages generated automatically may not be what you expect).
After opening AutoSel:
It will automatically select the target from the CQ candidates and initiate the call.
Once you notice that the target is unsuitable, the frequency is incorrect, or there are unusual occupancies/interference, immediately stop manually (close TX / exit FT8 / disable AutoSel).
If you find that it always calls certain radio stations that you don't want it to call:
Write the other person's callsign in autosel\_blacklist.txt (one per line), and then have the administrator place the file in the SD card DATA partition.
Recommendation: Treat AutoSel as an "assistant to help you select and move through the process," rather than a "fully automated radio." A person must be present.
2) Automatic notch filter (Auto DNF / Auto Notch)
The "Automatic Notch" logic has been added to the FT8 interface:
It will attempt to detect and suppress strong, narrow-band interference (approximately 70 Hz wide) at the beginning of each slot.
Design Goal: To reduce the occurrence of situations where strong carriers and spuris completely overwhelm the entire FT8 decoding process.
When entering or exiting FT8, try to restore your original DNF settings as much as possible, to avoid having your filtering settings inadvertently changed after you leave FT8.
3) New addition: FT8 Free MSG (FT8 Free Text / Type00 style, one-time free text)
On the FT8 page, navigate to Page 2:3. Press "Free MSG" to enter a free-text message, which will only be transmitted once during the next TX window.
Typical applications:
Send short, customized messages (e.g., TU 73, PSE QSY, QSO B4).
Prompts suitable for some non-standard but still compliant FT8 Free Text rules.
Limitations (These are protocol limitations for FT8 Free Text, not arbitrary settings):
Maximum 13 characters.
The character set is limited to: spaces, numbers, A–Z, and +, -, ., /, ?。
The system automatically converts lowercase characters to uppercase, filters out unsupported characters, and removes leading and trailing whitespace.
Behavior and Precautions:
If a QSO is currently in progress, or if transmission is busy, it will refuse to send (to avoid interrupting the process).
This is a "one-time TX" (repeats=1). If you were previously using CQ and had no active QSOs, sending a Free Message will automatically revert to CQ scheduling.
The content of Free MSG will be saved to /mnt/ft8_freetext.txt, and it will automatically load the previous content each time it is opened.
4) FT8 Other experience and stability fixes
Multi-turn repair of FT8 dialogue box behavior (such as audio resource competition, state transition boundary conditions, and waterfall display) aims to reduce occasional anomalies and improve continuous operation stability.
Reliability / Power Consumption: More stable and more energy-efficient.
CPU Idle Optimization: The main loop avoids unnecessary spinning when there are no tasks, reducing CPU usage.
In real-world FT8 operation tests, the maintainer observed that CPU usage decreased from approximately 29% to 9% (a reduction of about 70%), although this may vary depending on the specific machine and configuration.
A decrease in CPU activity can also help reduce the impact of "digital noise" on receiver hiss (especially noticeable in weak signal/high gain scenarios).
Remote control related stability fixes: Fixed a memory error (double free issue) that caused crashes/crashes.
Key/knob-related fixes: Multiple rounds of adjustments have been made to input behavior, reducing edge cases where "no response" or "incorrect rotation" occurs.
Regarding changes to appearance/system
Boot logo update (If you see changes in the startup screen, this is normal).
Adjustments to the web service startup script: Primarily aimed at ensuring that web functions start and locate page resources more reliably.
How to use it (without needing any computer knowledge)
Connect the X6100 to Wi-Fi and ensure that your phone/computer and the X6100 are on the same network.
Open the web page for the X6100 in your browser (usually at http://radio IP/).
