Recently, the open-source firmware for the K1 has been released. I'm very grateful to Armel for developing the underlying code so well; this gives me the opportunity to port the functionality I previously wrote for the K5.
I've added a simple Morse code (CW) tail, which many people like. While the Motorola-style MDC signaling sounds good, it doesn't really have much practical use in our actual amateur radio communications. My CW tail is more straightforward:
How to use it: In the menu, select "Roger" for MSG CW. Then, in Chirp, write your call sign on the second line (Line 2) of the welcome message. If you don't write anything on the second line, it will default to reading from the first line.
What's it used for?
Voice recognition for identification: When everyone gathers in a marketplace-like setting to chat, it's easy to get confused just by hearing the voices. Adding a unique CW (Continuous Wave) tail tone can instantly identify who is speaking.
Organize Net recordings: When you're regularly recording or organizing call logs, this is your "digital fingerprint." Even though it sounds fast at 100 WPM, you can easily identify it on a spectrogram, making it easy to backtrack.
Compliance: The system requires us to regularly report our call sign. This feature essentially automatically "reveals our location" after each transmission, saving time and ensuring safety.
The default speed setting was set quite high, which didn't occupy much channel time and also provided a better listening experience compared to the MDC.
