The number of FTM-10 and VX8R units in stock and use has been gradually decreasing, and there is no longer any interest in the issues related to compatibility or incompatibility.
However, using the Yaesu interface on small devices is definitely preferable, especially when dealing with frustrating situations. This leads to reduced versatility.
Furthermore, many Yaesu devices have dedicated microphone ports, even if the physical connectors are the same, the microphones will not work.
For example, I recently bought a VX8R microphone made in China, hoping it would work with the FTM-10. However, all I got was a speaker sound, and neither the PTT (push-to-talk) function nor the microphone worked.
