This is similar to a circularly polarized Yagi antenna, like a turnstile antenna. The largest, flat radiator provides circular polarization, while the two smaller cross-shaped radiators provide impedance matching. The "mesh" you see is actually the radiating surface, which increases the front-to-back ratio of the antenna, but has nothing to do with the mesh itself.🤣
This antenna is designed for use with satellite communication, so circular polarization is very important. It also needs to be portable, and the return on investment in the amateur radio field isn't significant because you don't have access to a fixed communication satellite like they do... The main lobe of the signal is being transmitted to LEO satellites.
