QTC is a special "message exchange" mechanism used in the competition to report your QSO (contact) records to European stations, in order to earn extra points. It's not a standard Q signal, but rather a dedicated "telegraph" system for the competition, which helps DX stations (non-European stations) interact with EU stations (European stations).
Definition
QTC stands for "Q Traffic" or "Q Telegrams". In competitions, it refers to the operation of returning a competition's QSO (callsign exchange) record to European stations (excluding RTTY mode). It is a mechanism for reciprocity: non-European stations send their contact records to European stations, and after receiving them, both parties score points. For example, in the full European DX competition, QTC must be used between European and non-European stations to increase international interaction.
- Main objective: By sharing QSO logs, improve scores and encourage strategic operation. Each QSO can only be reported once, and cannot be reported back to the original station.
Operating Instructions
QTC exchanges typically occur after a standard QSO, and the process involves initiating, announcing a series of contacts, transmitting, confirming, and recording. Operations can be performed in CW, SSB, or RTTY modes, but require manual or software assistance (such as WINTEST or N1MM).
- Initiate QTCAfter completing the QSO, the transmitting station (usually a DX station) says "QTC?". The receiving station (an EU station) responds with "QTC" or "Yes" to indicate agreement.
- Announcing a series: The sender announced "QTC X/Y" (where X is the series number, starting from 1; and Y is the quantity of this series, 1-10). For example, "QTC 3/7" indicates the third group, consisting of 7 QTCs.
- Transmit QTCSend each QTC individually, and the receiver must confirm receipt. After transmission, send "END" or "QRV?".
- Multiple exchanges: Two stations can exchange a maximum of 10 QTCs, which can be completed in multiple QSOs.
- Record requirements: The log must record the QTC number, time, frequency, and operating band; otherwise, it is invalid.
RTTY Mode Specifics: No intercontinental restrictions, but QTC still requires cross-continental communication, with a total of no more than 10 exchanges.
Format and examples
Each QTC includes three core elements: time (in UTC, with 4 digits), call sign, and QSO sequence number (starting from 001).
- Basic QTC format"Time/Call sign/Serial number", for example, "1307/DA1AA/431" indicates contact with DA1AA at 1307 UTC, with serial number 431.
- Series format"QTC X/Y", for example, "QTC 3/7" indicates the third group of QTCs, with a total of 7.
- Complete example(Sending process):
- Sender: "QTC 1/5" (Group 1, 5 QTCs)
- Then, one by one: "1 1307 DA1AA 431"
- Receiver repeats: "R 1307 DA1AA 431"
- Continuing to step 5: "End"
- Receiver confirmation: "QSL QTC"
Log example: QTC serial number, transmission time, frequency (e.g., 21011 kHz).
Meaning of scoring
QTC provides an additional basic score source, which is not counted in the multiplier but is directly added to the total QSO score.
- Scoring per item: For each correctly exchanged QTC, the sender and receiver each receive 1 point.
- Overall score formula(Total QSO score + Total QTC score) × Total multiplier (with band gain).
- ImpactFor DX stations, QTC can significantly improve scores (e.g., doubling them) because it rewards information sharing. European stations also benefit from receiving QTC.
Incomplete records or repeated use of QSOs will result in a score of zero.
Limitations
- Quantity: A maximum of 10 QTCs (send + receive) can be used between two stations.
- UniquenessEach contact must be a one-way communication; it cannot be self-reported or reported back to the original station.
- Direction: CW/SSB limited to DX contacts with Europe; RTTY can be used in both directions.
- Log: All entries must include complete records of the sequence number, time, and frequency; otherwise, they will be invalid.
