This article is written for my friends who are considering getting into this hobby. It does not include the setup instructions (there are already very detailed videos on Bilibili). Even though I haven't been actively involved for a while (I haven't posted anything in so long that I even forgot how to write Markdown), I still have the idea of revising and submitting this article to the HamCQ manual.
Suit: This article is intended solely as a reference for mainland Chinese friends participating in amateur radio A-class operational capability verification exams within Guangdong Province. It does not fully represent the current situation and may contain errors or omissions (please correct me if you find any).
I began to develop an interest in radio technology around mid-2024, starting with my understanding of two-way radios. To broaden my horizons and cultivate a wider range of interests, I took the exam for the Guangzhou High City Radio A license in October of that year, which allowed me to delve deeper into the world of radio.

Amateur Radio License: There are three types of amateur radio licenses: A, B, and C. First, you must obtain an A-class license. If you are interested in shortwave communication, you can apply for a B-class proficiency test after operating the station for six months. After obtaining a B-class license, you can communicate on the shortwave band. To obtain a C-class license, you must first have and operate a B-class radio station for two years before applying for a C-class proficiency test.
For readers who only need to operate in the UV band, an A license is sufficient. However, if you want to communicate with ham radio operators across the country or even globally using shortwave, obtaining a B/C license is essential. It's important to note that a ham radio operator's license and a radio station license are different. You must first obtain a ham radio operator's license before applying for a radio station license and obtaining a call sign to legally communicate. I will not elaborate on this further.
Obtaining a radio operator's license and obtaining a radio station license are not age-restricted. The field of radio communication is open to all ages, without borders or restrictions, which is one reason why it has thrived for over a century. It is a world guided by the principles of "consideration, loyalty, ambition, friendship, moderation, and patriotism," and welcomes everyone! 🎉
Preparation for certification
Once you've made the decision to prepare for the exam, you can start preparing. Because the registration process in Guangdong does not use the ZhiPu system (the universal registration website/software), please read carefully below.
First, openThis URLClick on the relevant Guangdong Province A and B-level amateur radio operator skills exam plan for that year to view the upcoming exams (If you don't see the exam plan or the exams have already been completed, I assume you are reading this article in January or December. In this case, please be patient and wait for the Radio Association to release the exam plan. Then, go back to check). After reviewing, decide which exam(s) you want to attend based on your own circumstances (My strongest recommendation is to choose an exam that is at least 31 days before the exam date). I do not recommend checking the Guangdong Radio Association's January-published exam plan article, as the exam plans will be updated according to actual conditions, and the links on the Guangdong Radio Association website will also be updated accordingly. The image shows the exam plan for 2025 (Please note that this is subject to change, so do not use it as a reference!). Currently, it is known that the exams in Dongguan have been postponed due to the Kikkonya heat wave epidemic.
Once you've decided to take the exam, follow Guangdong Radio's official WeChat account and wait for the release of exam information. You will also be able to get real-time updates on any changes to the exam situation. To register for the exam, you will need:
* A color scan of your ID (in JPG format, with a resolution of no less than 1024×768 pixels and no more than 3000×2000 pixels)
* Your phone number
* Your email address
* Your QQ number
* A digital copy of your white background ID photo (taken within the last 6 months, in JPG format, with a resolution of 480×640 pixels). Please note that photos taken in everyday settings are not allowed.
* Proof of your residence
* Your personal information
Please prepare these documents and send them to the local radio association via email. Refer to the example email content below for reference.This linkPlease fill out the application carefully and accurately. Sometimes, the registration method may not involve sending an email, but rather filling out a QR code questionnaire, which you can also access via the link. After completing the registration, check to see if you were successful in obtaining exam eligibility. Due to the high number of applicants each time, it can be difficult to secure a spot. If you are unsuccessful, continue studying and wait for the next registration period.
The exam is not very difficult, and the difficulty of the questions is even less than that of simply registering. The system will randomly select 30 questions from over 360 questions, and passing requires answering at least 25 questions correctly. You can practice on the "HAM Simulation Exam" mini-program. Because I have always been unable to register for the exam, I had a lot of time to review, and eventually I successfully passed the exam. It is absolutely not recommended to simply memorize the answers to the questions. The following is an example question from the mini-program.
Exam Process
This is a personal account of my own experiences, and should only be used as a reference. Please use your own judgment based on your specific situation.
On the day of the exam, you must bring a black pen, pencil, eraser, and your ID card. The author arrived at the exam venue on October 26, 2024, by taking the "Shuiyu" train from home to Maoming Station, then taking a ride-sharing service to Gaozhou. The author's friend drove directly to the exam venue. After arriving at the venue, they ate lunch and then waited outside for a while before entering. The picture below is a photo of the entrance to the exam hall.
After entering, I went to collect my exam ticket (which I didn't seem to use later). Then, I used a practice test app under the tree in front of the classroom and took several practice tests to make sure I passed completely. Fifteen minutes before the exam, I entered the examination room and waited for the papers and answer sheets. After receiving the answer sheet, I filled in my name and ID card. The area for filling out the answer sheet was circular, and I think I've only seen this type of answer sheet in videos from abroad. Once completed, I could submit the paper and leave early. The picture is of the exam ticket; the mosaic is what I took at the time, so it's quite ugly (）.

Follow-up
The following involved a long wait (it was particularly long). Approximately one to two weeks after the exam, Guangdong Radio's official WeChat account will publish the exam results. It takes about a month to find your certificate number in the ZhiPu app. Once you can find your certificate number, the certificate will be mailed within one week via SF Express. The picture is a photo taken on the day the article was published, showing a comparison between the old and new certificates.
