If a beginner QRP 5W radio cannot make contact in SSB mode, it is understandable. However, if it cannot make contact in FT8 mode either, you should check your antenna and transceiver to ensure they are functioning correctly. With 5W FT8, it's easy to communicate internationally, and even within the country.
In SSB mode, I recommend setting up an outdoor station. Avoid calling on frequencies used in busy markets. Instead, try contacting recently connected stations on adjacent or nearby frequencies. After announcing your callsign, add "QRP" to increase your chances of success. The best way to quickly enter the shortwave band is to find an experienced HAM and have them guide you through a successful contact.
