Three years ago, when I first got involved in amateur radio, I was always wondering if there was a way to allow amateur radio operators to communicate with people online without losing data.

I suddenly felt motivated, watched the video, and then looked at my wallet. I decided it wasn't worth it. My skills and abilities wouldn't allow me to control the PTT communication using a computer; this is very important for Winlink, which I will explain further below.
After three years, which is this year, I acquired an FT897 full-band, all-mode radio so that I could easily connect to my computer for around $20. This allows me to use the UV band to unlock high-speed Wilink communication, and FM's large bandwidth doesn't really do the 2.5 kHz narrow-band justice.

The Winlink system's operation is straightforward and easy to understand. If you already use FT8, using Winlink will be a breeze. Its principle involves using a software-based modem on a shortwave radio to transmit data to an internet-connected receiving radio station. Then, the server forwards your email to anyone connected to the internet.
Someone will definitely say: "This won't work; shortwave communication for data transmission is unreliable! You need very strong signal quality."
When I'm using my VARA modem for communication, I only use a power output of no more than 20W and a $100 antenna. The receiving server has a much lower power output, but as long as I can hear the faint sound from the other side, we can successfully establish a connection. If I had a better antenna and environment, would it make a difference?
What makes Winlink suitable for emergency communication?
I believe their servers are always online and cover all frequency bands, but the 7050 is not. Also, you can send emails directly to anyone on the internet through a Winlink server, which seems very likely. And it's not just text; any type of computer file can be sent. Plus, there's no packet loss or data corruption. I think what's most important is the ability to communicate with people on the internet!
Why I recommend Winlink
1. Many WinLink-compatible modems are available, including the recently popular Vara. It can automatically select the appropriate mode based on the signal strength of both parties, greatly improving efficiency and enabling data transmission without loss in video communication.
2. winlnk can show you which time periods, frequency bands, and servers have the highest success rate for connections.
3. Winlink not only allows communication with servers, but also enables direct P2P (peer-to-peer) communication between users.
4. The 4WinLink system can also use the shortwave band. If you use the UV segment FM mode with a high-speed modem from Ukraine, the speed will be significantly improved. Furthermore, the UV segment signal is very stable. I previously tested it with another ham and sent many large images using it.

Currently, using radio and internet connections is very rare. I only know of this one method, and I hope that there will be more ways to connect to the internet in the future, even though the bandwidth is narrow. However, people in the 1990s also used such narrow bandwidth for online surfing.
