BG4LZP First, ask yourself a few questions:
- Am I proficient in using power drills, bench drills, and saws? Do I also have a good understanding of different types of screws and nuts?
- Do I have a proper measuring tape and will I use it correctly?
- Will I be able to use a spectrum analyzer or vector network analyzer correctly?
If everything looks good, let's get started. Making antennas isn't about designing or measuring them; as long as you follow the specifications in the diagram and accurately locate the holes, there shouldn't be any major problems. However, for 70cm multi-element antennas, I don't recommend starting immediately. Many experienced users have 70cm band antennas with positions accurate to within 0.01mm; making even a single mistake in drilling can lead to significant cumulative errors later on.
It's best to include a question, because you'll likely ask immediately: Does the main beam have to be insulated?
The answer is no. However, the excitation unit must be isolated from the main beam. If the main beam is a conductor, other exciters need to consider the correction factor with respect to the main beam, which is called the "main beam correction."
