BI7KHZ Actually, you don't need a fishing rod. I'm currently using the Eagle HA-1850 GP antenna. In addition to the antenna, I also bought a magnetic ground sheet. I set up the antenna on my balcony window, connected to the outdoor unit of my air conditioner, and used a magnetic, adjustable base for the stand. First, I installed the ground sheet, then attached it to the exterior of the air conditioner. Finally, I adjusted the length using the antenna's frequency settings. My QTH (base station location) in Beijing is now connected to Harbin, Qiqihar, and Changchun, among other locations. The signal strength is also good.

If you have rice, you could also consider the Comet HFJ-350M GP antenna; it's a bit more expensive, but I can't comment on its performance since I don't have one.

For directional antennas, depending on your building's height, you can install them at 20 meters or 40 meters, angling them downwards towards the ground, a tree, or any other location that doesn't obstruct pedestrian traffic.

If you're looking for a simple solution, using a "wild-arm" antenna on the roof is more direct and efficient than using a fishing rod. If the distance isn't sufficient, you can also use shorter antennas, such as ten-meter long whips, which are generally easy to install. Also, the MA50, a full-sized V-shaped antenna that operates in a single band, offers very high efficiency! This is a great option for beginners!

BG5EWT I tested it on Saturday, and it was okay. I set up a makeshift fishing rod outside the window, and it worked reasonably well (although not as efficient as the dipole antenna). You can also choose the M哥's 01 antenna, but changing frequencies is slightly more complicated, as you need to replace the coil. I bought both, one for use in the car and one for home. For May Day, I plan to take the 1850 zone to Wildyard to test its efficiency when set up on the ground.

I am currently using a DKGP antenna with a 10-day tuning box and a 5.6-meter pull-out rod. This configuration works well for the 10-15 meter band, but it is more difficult to achieve good performance on other bands. I do not recommend using a shortened antenna.

For a clothesline mounted on a balcony or window sill, you need to consider whether it's easy to retract. A 5.6-meter pull-out rod, if left outside for an extended period, can still be dangerous in windy weather. Therefore, the ease of retraction and extension should be carefully considered each time.
If I'm the type of person who doesn't want to constantly maintain something, then I would opt for a more robust option. However, this would still require regular checks and maintenance, especially during the spring and autumn when the weather is favorable. This ensures safety. When installing it permanently, I would also consider whether my neighbors might have any objections, such as noise or visibility issues from their windows.
