The first Yagi antenna for a C-class newbie was set up like this...
The electromagnetic environment at home is very poor, resulting in a constant S9+20 noise floor. Even the best noise-canceling features are useless. So, I bring my equipment and play outdoors.
Initially, I used only portable antennas like GP-end feed antennas. However, I later found that even with GP antennas, the noise level was still high and the quality was poor (not because they couldn't transmit far, but because they weren't receiving properly).
I've also been experimenting with end-fed antennas, and I'm quite satisfied with the results. The ability to switch between four frequency bands is very convenient, and the natural resonance eliminates the need for a manual tuning knob. I've been using an end-fed antenna for about a year now.
I'm starting to dislike the low efficiency of the direct feed, and I have specific requirements for the installation location. A spacious area is required for optimal use of the direct feed.
I'm starting to research the performance of dipole antennas, specifically horizontal dipole antennas. They have very high efficiency. I've been using a temporary outdoor antenna on the banks of the Yangtze River for a long time, and it has been successfully used for QSO with other stations. However, it requires a specific mounting height! I need a better location.
I then tinkered with the mini VHF antenna. The mini VHF is quite good, similar in efficiency to the DP antenna. It can be used for both near and far distances, as long as there's a place to park and set it up. It's definitely an antenna that doesn't require picky placement. I really love it!
So, the question arises: Once, when 29.6FM encountered the Kramay Radio station, I copied their 59+60 signal. However, my voice was completely unintelligible. After investigation, I found that my antenna's elevation angle was too high. This caused a difference in the angles of the two antennas, resulting in what is known as "unequal propagation." The unequal propagation occurred because of the difference in the antenna angles.
I kept experimenting, and initially wanted a portable antenna. However, the more I experimented with antennas, the larger they became. I couldn't resist the temptation to get a bigger one, so eventually I got a portable Yagi antenna.
Due to portability, I can only use single-band high-frequency antennas. This allows me to keep the size small, making it easy for one person to set up in the field. The following images illustrate this:








So, the problem arises again: a Yagi antenna in the high band has a much greater distance limitation! It seems that the signal from Xinjiang is not reaching its intended destination. With just one or two hops, it's already reaching Europe... Okay, let's keep trying!
