During a previous camping trip, I went to a remote location with very weak LTE signal (I had to stand on a high point and hold my phone up to get a connection), but it was close to a repeater. I thought about using APRS to maintain contact with the outside world.
I remembered seeing before how to send and receive emails using APRS via EMAIL-2, so I conducted some tests.
1、The compatibility of the digipeter is somewhat poor. The APRS function built into the K5's CEC firmware does not work, but using Direwolf results in a high success rate. Using aprsdroid has a moderate to high success rate.
2、The digipeater may have issues with complex characters. I added "Ciao～(∠・ω" to the beacon.< )⌒☆」I accidentally shut down the repeater... it took over an hour to recover.
3、It appears that "igate" only handles RF-to-IS communication, not IS-to-RF. This means that radio APRS and internet APRS (or non-repeater APRS) that require network routing for coverage can only be used for one-way communication, such as sending APRS messages but not receiving them.
It seems that an APRS repeater might be suitable for simple beaconing, but not so good for interactive communication... Also, although the underlying protocol is 1200 bps AFSK, the decoding rate isn't very high.
