UV full-mode machines are never cheap, and linear forwarders aren't something you can easily acquire when you're just starting out.

It's definitely worth buying an SDR. If you want to experiment with shortwave, you can buy a RSP1 from Taobao for under 200 yuan, made by BG7YZF. If you buy a shortwave radio like the 891 (without a spectrum), you can use this as a spectrum analyzer and connect it to a switcher to act as a small 7300.

With models like the 8600+ and U7V4, many common FM forwarders can be used effectively. When you get tired of using them, it's time to consider getting a shortwave radio and obtaining your B license.
FT8 is commonly used on shortwave, primarily for exchanging fixed information, but can also be used to transmit free messages (rarely). It's currently very popular. You can also find FT8 activity on 2m (144MHz) and 6m (50MHz), but you need to wait for unusual propagation conditions. You can download jtdx and connect it to a websdr (such as kiwisdr) to try decoding frequencies like 14074/21074, which are used for FT8 communication.
