Okay, the center is where the RF power output goes, and it can't be disconnected. The sides are for connecting to the shielding layer. If you've worked with DP (like a dipole, positive V, or negative V), you know that on either side of the DP, one end connects to the central layer (which is in the middle), and the other end connects to the shielding layer (both sides). It can't be disconnected; you need to solder it back together.
It's best to avoid this, as it can lead to the amplifier burning out due to lack of load. (I recommend checking the power output to see if there's a problem; otherwise, you'll have to replace the amplifier.) My 8800 and GT12 experienced this issue, and both amplifiers failed when using the original GT12 antenna (SWR = 20). This was quite inconvenient.
