Who are the owners of RTL-SDR?
No person or company owns RTL-SDR and all of its supported software and hardware. However, it was the combined efforts of Antti Palosaari, Eric Fry, and Osmocom (particularly Steve Markgraf) who first discovered that certain TV dongles could be used for SDR. In particular, Osmocom developed the first RTL-SDR driver, which was released as open source.
Since then, RTL-SDR has become a community-driven phenomenon. Certain companies, including us at the RTL-SDR Blog, have taken on the responsibility of producing our own version of RTL-SDR dongles that perform better than standard TV dongles. However, none of this would be possible without the wider community's development and support for all the free software.

Key pioneers: Antti Palosaari, Eric Fry, and Osmocom. Notably, Steve Markgraf from Osmocom, who developed the initial driver.
Hardware sellers: Chinese factories that produce and sell generic TV dongles. Sellers of RTL-SDRs, such as the RTL-SDR Blog, which have been optimized for SDR use.
Community Software/Hardware Developers: Anyone who has developed software for the RTL-SDR, or has discovered and documented a hardware modification for the RTL-SDR.
Community Bloggers: RTL-SDR Blog, and other bloggers/content creators who write about and promote RTL-SDR applications.
Broader Community: Anyone using RTL-SDRs.
What is the RTL-SDR Blog?
RTL-SDR.com (the RTL-SDR Blog) began as a hobby where we could upload our RTL-SDR tutorials and curate all other RTL-SDR related content onto a single blog. Since its inception, we have continued to expand, creating many tutorials, writing a guidebook, and starting the signal identification wiki.
A few years ago, we decided to develop our own RTL-SDR dongle hardware with significant improvements that would benefit SDR users. Since then, we have continued to improve our RTL-SDR hardware and are currently at the V3 and V4 dongle stage.
