In reality, this weekend's activity in Jiaxing by the HAM club was just a regular outdoor antenna setup event. It also coincided with the ARRL 10-meter band competition, and since I didn't bring my keyer, I decided to participate in the SSB competition as well.
Although I participated in several CW competitions this year, they were all in CW mode. This was my first time participating in SSB mode, and it felt more challenging than I expected. The main difficulty came from having to listen for and copy the call signs, which proved difficult for my less-than-sensitive hearing. In addition, some operators had strange accents that made it hard to understand even after listening to a call sign several times. It was quite frustrating.
What was even more frustrating is that my radio had been set to 5 watts during the last calibration, and I completely forgot to change it back! This resulted in me being able to make 5 QSOs within just 6 hours, which was incredibly frustrating. I was forced to operate QRP.
Indeed, one cannot afford to fight without preparation.
