There are many different digital systems to choose from. When selecting a system, it's also helpful to see what other amateur radio operators in your area are using and which repeaters are available. Each system has its own prominent brands: ICOM primarily promotes D-Star, Yaesu primarily promotes C4FM, Motorola and Hytera primarily promote DMR. Many of their popular models are dual-mode digital systems. More affordable, mainstream brands are more likely to be compatible with DMR.
