I recently participated in the CQWW RTTY contest and the Makrothen competition (a very niche event; rules can be found [link to rules]). https://www.pl259.org/makrothen/makrothen-rules/ ) Two RTTY-based competitions, which were quite rough and mainly aimed at understanding the operation and gameplay of RTTY. There's nothing special happening this weekend, so I'll participate in the WAE RTTY competition.
In RTTY mode, WAE relaxed the competition rules, no longer limited to working only between EU and DX stations, but allowing "everyone to work everyone." WAE also has a QTC (Quick Tone Communication) mode, which similarly relaxes the rules: as long as there is cross-continental communication, both parties can use QTC for TX/RX. The competition format is very interesting.
Here's a brief overview of my environment:
QTH: Northwest China University, located in the northwest corner of Taiyuan City, with mountains surrounding it on the west and north sides.
Antenna: 20-meter feed, mounted on the roof of the 7th floor, running horizontally east and west.
Radio: Yaesu FT-710
Although the University of North China is located outside the city center, my rented apartment is in a village outside the campus, and there are two electric bicycle charging stations on the ground floor. The electromagnetic environment is very poor. Even under these conditions, I was still able to make 152 QSOs and 105 QTC. This is extremely difficult in SSB mode, and this week there was a JIDX SSB competition, so I listened to it briefly. I could only clearly receive a few signals. RTTY, because it uses less bandwidth and doesn't require high power, has relatively low noise requirements, and it's also more fun than FT8. It is now my favorite mode. The disadvantage is that it is quite niche, and there are very few HAMs who play RTTY. You can only enjoy it during competitions.
