Let's discuss my understanding of DTMF functionality in two-way radios.
In simple terms
The DTMF function on a two-way radio involves one radio dialing another radio.
For example, suppose there are three DTMF-enabled walkie-talkies with IDs of 123, 456, and 789, all in DTMF mode (the specific operation may vary). If you press and hold the PTT on the 123 walkie-talkie, then press 456, and establish a normal connection, the 456 walkie-talkie will receive your signal. However, the 789 walkie-talkie will only receive 456, not 789, so it won't be able to intercept your signal.
In addition to call-and-response between walkie-talkies, other rules could be considered, such as:
- If you join group ID 101, and call out to group 101, all devices with that group ID will be able to receive the signal. It's not that radios with that group ID won't receive any signal.
- Include some control commands, such as "jamming" (temporarily disabling the other party's radio) and "silencing" (permanently disabling the other party's radio).
So, what exactly does DTMF do?
It's essentially useless for amateur radio enthusiasts.
For a large team, DTMF can be very useful. For example, a large hotel has three teams: security, reception, and cleaning staff. As the manager, you can set up the DTMF functions for each team's walkie-talkies. This allows you to use DTMF to make calls between different groups. You can call specific people using the same walkie-talkie, and when you call the security team, the cleaning staff won't hear your call, and vice versa.
If you find this scenario too simple, you can make it more complex by increasing the team size, adding a command center, increasing the number of security personnel, and clarifying the rules. For example, the supervisor should only communicate with each security captain, and the security captains should only communicate with the few security personnel they manage.
Is it necessary to use it then?
If it's for commercial use, knowing that using two-way radios legally is important, but if you want to save on the cost of the equipment and frequency fees, you could consider a simulated two-way radio with DTMF support.
If it's for commercial use, but I don't know or don't intend to use it legally, then simply using three different channels would be the easiest solution. Making the machine's functions too complicated makes it difficult for security personnel to understand and operate.
If it's for commercial use and you have the budget to spend freely, you can directly purchase a digital machine, which offers more advanced features.
