-HamCq- If you're simply trying to determine if an antenna is working correctly, find a nearby, friendly station and establish direct communication. If this works, it indicates that the antenna can transmit (and likely receive) properly.
If you want to identify the resonant frequency of an antenna, borrow a vector network analyzer (VNA) from a friend. This requires carefully measuring the standing wave ratio (SWR) to find the lowest SWR and the usable range (where SWR is below 3). Alternatively, you can use a spectrum analyzer to visually see the antenna's center frequency and standing wave curve.
Generally speaking, antennas are not easily damaged.
