I recently had some free time and decided to buy a high-power radio and a fun radio to play with. I'm planning to purchase the BaoFeng UV-5RH.
Why choose to buy the 5RH instead of other devices?
First, for me, the best experience comes from actually having the device. I purchased a standard 5RH package on a certain e-commerce platform for around 100 yuan. Currently, I already have a KT-8900.
Many devices for UV-K5/6 and UV-5R have not been tested with a "high-power" handheld like the 5RH.
The initial feeling upon receiving it.
When I received the device, I was immediately struck by its thickness. Compared to the original 5R, the 5RH was already wider even without adding a battery.
I glanced at the label and saw "5RM". I immediately asked customer service about it.
According to the customer service, the BF-5RH series is divided into M and L versions. Both can receive the 108-136 AM aviation and "Shushu" frequency bands. They specifically mentioned in the manual that the L version does not support voice interference suppression, but I don't understand what the purpose of voice interference suppression is.
After installing the battery, the substantial feel of the 5RH was fully realized. It felt very comfortable in my hand. Unlike some manufacturers who completely ignore user hand shape.
Operational testing
After getting home, I installed it with my U-band CJU antenna. Using the PN27WE callsign, I contacted the Zhongke repeater in the Daqing area. According to the signal report from BG2CPF, the signal strength was 55/56.
After some background noise, the ISS passed by. I temporarily used the frequency provided by a U2V2 expert using lactic acid bacteria to successfully connect with BG2GJQ. This made me very satisfied with its performance.
Analysis of advantages and disadvantages
The BaoFeng product line focuses on a "you have me, I have you" concept, creating an atmosphere of vibrant competition and mutual benefit. When selecting equipment, please prioritize those shipped from Quanzhou whenever possible.
Furthermore, the extremely wide and thick design of the 5RH radio makes it unfriendly for enthusiasts who are used to smaller radios like the K5/6 or those unfamiliar with color-screen radios. Most users would likely be confused and need a short period to learn how to operate the menu.
I strongly advise anyone who has purchased a 5RH to buy an alternative antenna. The original one is completely unusable!
His advantages are also very clear: once approved, the 5RH will undoubtedly replace its predecessor, the 5R.
Higher power than 5R, with a price that doesn't increase significantly. Also includes built-in Type-C charging port.
I recommend that enthusiasts who enjoy complex urban environments and amateur satellite communication, particularly those in mountainous areas, try out the 5RH device.
