Recently, China Post's international mail delivery times have once again reached a critical low. This is the worst performance for China Post's international mail delivery times since the special period three years ago.
According to reports, starting from late June/early July 2024, the Shanghai Exchange Bureau's European Route vessel operations have been unable to transport mail. This is because the Shanghai Exchange Bureau is the largest inland waterway mail transfer center in China, and this disruption has resulted in most provinces across the country being unable to export mail via the European Route (both by sea and land), including letters and parcels. Only a few provinces with connections to the Europe-China railway are able to transport mail via rail.
Despite the cessation of operations for the European Road route by Shanghai Exchange Bureau, which has been ongoing for nearly two months, no changes have been made to the postal delivery system. As a result, a large volume of mail is still accumulating within the Shanghai Exchange Bureau. According to reports, the Shanghai Exchange Bureau is working to return these items, but the rate at which they are being returned is slower than the rate at which they are arriving.
Furthermore, recently, the Shanghai International Air Mail route has also experienced relatively severe delays. The delivery time for air parcels originating from Shanghai to Europe is approaching two months, and it takes nearly a week for mail traveling to other destinations to reach the aircraft. In comparison to early this year, the overall delivery time of outgoing mail from the Shanghai Exchange Bureau has decreased significantly.
