As someone who has been through this, here's my advice:
1. Regardless of whether or not I disconnect the grounding wire, when it's raining and there's lightning, I don't just turn off the device; I also need to unplug the grounding cable. This is why I didn't suffer any damage when I was struck by lightning – I simply replaced the grounding cable. The core of the grounding cable and the outer copper skin were both charred.
2. The grounding end of the surge protector should ideally be connected to a point with equal potential on the building's frame, i.e., the building's ground connection. It must not be connected to the building's surge protection strip.
Because the building's lightning protection system is connected in phase, if any location is struck by lightning, it will travel back through the system and enter the building. Removing the feeder line will reduce the damage (unless your feeder line is already the highest point within the complex or area; in that case, removing it won't help, but connecting a lightning protection system would still be beneficial).
3. The lightning strike grounding should not be connected to indoor safety barriers, as these are also not safe and can sometimes cause a shock if they detect electrical signals.
