For ultimate portability, I recommend adding a Micro-X 4G module to the Pi 0W. Installation is very simple; it doesn't require any wiring, just screw it in and attach the antenna. (If you want to see how it looks after installation, you can find an MMDVM box without a lid on Yellow Fish.)
However, all 4G modules have a drawback: they consume a significant amount of power. While low-power IoT modules would theoretically be better, they also compete with the MMDVM board for serial ports and require control via AT commands, which necessitates modifications to the software, unlike the simpler 4G modules.
When used in a portable setting, the Raspberry Pi 0 W is actually perfectly adequate, and its small size, low power consumption, and minimal heat output are all advantages. If you use a larger heatsink, there will be enough space inside the square box to fit the battery.
The B series interface has many options, but it's not practical to use them for portability. Furthermore, any extra performance would be wasted on the flashy web interface and HDMI display of the WPSD system unless there was another specific purpose for it.
