Winlink is a network composed of amateur radio and licensed government radio stations, providing global radio email using radio paths without the internet. The system is entirely built, operated, and managed by licensed "ham" volunteers. It supports emails with attachments, location reports, weather and information announcements, and is known for its role in interoperable emergency and disaster communications. It can operate automatically without the internet using intelligent network radio repeaters.
Winlink initially provided connectivity services for amateur radio (also known as ham radio). It is renowned for its crucial role in global emergency and disaster communications. The system previously utilized multiple central message servers worldwide to achieve redundancy, but was upgraded from 2017 to 2018 to Amazon Web Services, providing a geographically redundant virtual server cluster with dynamic load balancing and global content distribution. Since 2013, the gateway station has operated as part of the Winlink hybrid network in the HF frequency band, providing message forwarding and transmission through a mesh-based intelligent network when internet connectivity is damaged or unavailable. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, it gradually became the standard network system for global amateur radio email. Furthermore, to meet the demand for improved disaster response communications in the mid-to-late 2000s, the network was expanded to provide separate parallel radio email networks for organizations such as MARS, British Cadet, Austrian Red Cross, and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, including the SHARES HF plan and other groups.
